Is Stevia safe

More and more people today tend to use Stevia instead of sugar. One of the benefits of using Stevia instead of sugar is that it is sweeter than the regular crystallized table sugar. It also has less calories, which is another advantage of it. However, when people use it, they rarely think about one question – is Stevia safe?
Talking about safety, the US Food and Drug Administration has considered Stevia as safe to be used. It claimed that Stevia is “generally recognized as safe”. Thus, it seems that sugar can be substituted with Stevia with no big problems.
However, there is one point in which the US Food and Drug Administration does not give an approval. The organization has claimed that because of possible effects on human’s health, using of the whole leaf of Stevia as additives of food are not allowed. Researchers have also stated that raw Stevia can be harmful to humans because it can derange the control of blood sugar. Also, it can damage kidney systems and cause cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, answering to the question is Stevia safe it should be reminded that it has to be used only in an extracted form and not in a form of a whole leaf.

It is also known that Stevia has been used as a sweetener in South America for quite a while already, and it is coming to the shelves of other countries only nowadays. It also has to be remembered that in general Stevia does not raise blood sugar if it is used in normal quantities and not overdosed. Until the end of the year 2008 Stevia was sold in the United States only as a dietary supplement, because it was thought that if it was used instead of regular crystallized white sugar, it could do harm to human’s health.
In the 1980s, research was made regarding the usage of Stevia, in which animals were used, and the conclusion was drawn that it can have adverse effects on reproductive development and fertility and it even can cause mutation processes.
However, recently the question of is Stevia safe has been addressed to the Food and Drug Administration, which accepted Stevia to be used instead of white crystallized table sugar. However, the administration still states that the whole leaf of Stevia cannot be used as a supplementary of such sugar, since it can possibly cause adverse effects on humans.
