First lets familiarize with this herb and after that we will talk about stevia side effects. It is an herb. It is a small bush which comes from Paraguay. Now it is widespread over the world in diferent climatic locations and successfully grown at different cultivation conditions. It is one of natural sweeteners used for centuries. It is used in cosmetics, pharmacy, drinks and food industries. Full name is Stevia rebaudiana. Her leafs are very sweet and their taste remains longer than other sugar for example like table sugar. Guarani Indians used it for centuries. Earlier it was called Yerba dulce, later native Latin American nation called it in a lot of different names like caa-ehe, azuca-caa, kaa-he-E and ca-a-yupe and now its name is Stevia called by Spanish botanist, physician and researcher Petrus Jacobus Stevus (Pedro Jaime Esteve 1500–1556). Stevia rebaudiana as known as non-caloric, low-carbohydrate, has low-sugar. It is a natural high-potency sweetener.
Belongs to Compositae (Asteraceae) family. From 154 members of this herb. Only two of them produce sweet Steviol glycosides.

It has 2 main glycosides: stevioside and rebaudioside A (also known as Reb A) or in another words Steviol glycosides are: Stevioside and Rebaudioside A (Reb A). They are compounds of Steviol glycoside which extracted from this herb leafs and they are responsible for sweetness. In this plant rebaudioside A has the least bitterness of all Steviol glycosides. Stevioside has 2 linked glucose molecules and Rebaudioside A has 3. This bush tissue by weight is:
stevioside 5–10% (250–300X sweeter than sugar).
rebaudioside A 2–4% (350–450X sweeter than sugar).
rebaudioside C 1–2%.
dulcoside A ½–1%.
Whole this herb leafs has about 90 compounds. About 50 of them are identified. Because not only Rebaudioside are in this shrub. Steviol glycoside is 40-300 sweeter than table sugar but almost has no carbohydrates. For example table sugar has 4 calories per gram while Steviol glycoside has 0.2 calories. YES… like i mansion about this earlier in the post dietary supplements made from this bush leafs are non-caloric (of course if it hasn’t other caloric supplements). This products are used by people who are trying to weight loss. It is perfect for diabetics because this shrub have a negligible impact on blood glucose levels. If you are diabetic or follow carbohydrate diet this herb is right for you. So does Stevia side effects exist?

1985 scientists reported that two of the Steviol glycosides: stevioside and rebaudioside. These compounds are from this plants leaf. They are mutagen and have negative events. But this proposition was criticized with comparison that even distilled water could be mutagen. In many years studies of this product show bad and good results. Bad that some searches showed steviol and stevioside to be weak mutagens. But most research show absence of stevia side effects. In 2008 year 14 of 16 studies show no genotoxic of stevioside and 11 of 15 studies show no genotoxic of steviol and study of rebaudioside A show no genotoxic. There are no evidence that this herb can cause birth mutation or cancer. All other searches show that this bush don’t have any negative events. It only help against metabolic, diabetes, improve insulin production, reduce hypertension and many other good things.
