Stevia is a sugar substitute. It is very popular food ingredient which even can boost our immune system. What i mean is that this product has anti disease symptoms. Of course it is just a presumption, but it is better than nothing. This food supplement is good for people who are diabetics, because this product hasn’t calories. Not at all it is about 140 times sweeter then table sugar. So what is Stevia? Why it is so sweet?
This sugar substitute is made from amazing Stevia rebaudiana leaves. It is a plant which is in use about 1500 years. Guarani people used it in tea and called it sweet medicine treatment. Our manufacturers usually do they find old natural plants, herbs, roots etc. and make from them products. Some of them are full of side effects, meanwhile others has good benefits to our health and body.

I was trying to find some negative information about this food supplement, but unfortunately. So i decided to look at this food ingredient deeper. I thought i will look for its compounds from which this product is made of. Unfortunately, but these compounds don’t have any negative effects. Now you know what is Stevia. If you interesting i will write components from which Stevia is made of.
This sugar substitute is made only from steviol glycosides called steviosides and rebaudiosides. These compounds can be found and extracted only from Stevia rebaudiana plant leaves. As this plant to us has positive affects so these chemical compounds are also safe to use. Only stevioside and rebaudioside make this food supplement so sweet.
I don’t think you would be interesting in molecular structure of these two steviol glycosides so I won’t write about it. At the end of my article about what is Stevia i want to write some information about some countries which has banned or gave a legal status to this sugar substitute.
This food additive was banned in United States in 1991 anonymous complain. It is believed that a Food and Drug Administration action was either an industry pressure. In my opinion this pressure was from Truvia manufacturers, which spent 7 million dollars in advertising their product. Stevia approved as safe food additive in:
1970 – Japan.
1984 – China.
1986 – Brazil.
Other countries legalize this sugar substitute in late 21st century.
